This talk presented by a different speaker than listed, due to the ash storm that hampered the arrival of most of the european representatives, was about a database collected mapping the sites of biomass production around the world. Currently in the United States and around the world, except for Europe, we are focused on producing bioethanol. Europe on the other hand is concerned about producing biodiesel. The website www.task39.org is a really neat resource for this. The speaker highlighted different project going on through the world tackling biofuel and what stage in production they are at. All of the projects follow the pretreatment, hydrolysis, fermentation pathway with variations on how each of the steps is accomplished. Some of my favorite projects were the ones working on second generation biofuels such as Verenium I and II that were focused on using sugar cane bagasse and energy cane as a source of biofuel.
